I started this damn thing awhile back - ten years now. These things here are representative of the beginning. I no longer do much of this except when teaching or when I need something specific for my personal studio. The instruments in this section are modified or "circuit bent" - they represent illogic to some extent. The sometimes chaotic rhythms and textures they speak become controllable, making clear the inherent order that lies within chaos...The machine is no longer entirely reliant on the user, and is allowed the freedom to roam from it's usual routine. These instruments become an expression of an underlying chaotic nature. The circuit bent instrument represents more than just illogic. It's playing an instrument in a way that it was never meant to play...Only it's been permanantly rewired to be played that way. At some point some bentstruments may have had enough of your poking around thier insides...The outcome of the next playing experience may possibly be something entirely new. Many other people have taken this art to a much greater level than I'll ever attempt. These are just early things that at the time were what seemed to be more extensively modified than anything I could find - which at the time was the goal. Now there are folks who actually know electronics and are doing amazing things with these toys and keyboards - adding midi and everything. If you're into this work I encourage you to look around and find those people. Anywho - have a look around here and you may still find some inspiration. |
